Missions

South Vietnam, especially the southern 1/3 of the country, is covered with waterways, both natural and man-made. This created a logistical nightmare for the ground forces. In 1966, the Navy responded to this problem by the creation of the Mobile Riverine Force, consisting of Armored Troop Carriers, Monitors (similar to the Civil War variety), Command and Communication Boats, Assault Support Patrol Boats, Flamethrower-equipped boats, and Refueling boats, all of which were served and supported by a fleet of Troop Ships, LST's, Repair Ships, Barracks barges, and other supporting vessels. The Mobile Riverine Force became the partnership between the Army and Navy in fighting the war in the rice paddies, canals and treacherous waterways of the south. While they were principally congregated in the IV Corps area, they were also called into service in the rivers of I Corps, the area nearest the DMZ, and at some times in the III corps area.

In addition to patrolling the coastal waters, these boats made periodic raids into the inland waterways. However, the patrolling and interdiction efforts of the inland waterways was the primary responsibility of Task Force 116, made up of PBR's (Patrol Boat, River). The PBR sailors, the Swifties, and the MRF's navy crews who were collectively known as the "Black Berets,"

In the years following its inception, the Brown Water Navy fought thousands of brief but bloody battles for control of large water-bound areas of Vietnam's rice bowl and of major enemy supply routes from Cambodia. Names like "Blood Creek", "Coral Bend", "Rocket Alley", were etched into the lore of the struggle for Vietnam's crucial inland waterways as the Brown Water Navy patrolled border rivers, delta canals and the shipping lanes to Saigon. This Brown Water Navy played an important role in Vietnam and was successful throughout the campaign.

A tiny mountain, Dong Ap Bia, marked on the maps as hill 937. Hill 937 is said by some to be one of the fiercest battles in Vietnam. In May of 1969 the American command planned to clear out the A Shau Valley using ten battalions of infantry, including the 9th Marine Regiment, the 3d ARVN Regiment, the 3/5th Cavalry, and three air assault battalions: 1/506th, 2/501st, and 3/187th. The 501st and the 506th mission were to destroy the enemy in their own operating areas and block escape routes into Laos. Dong Ap Bia, was given the nickname 'Hamburger Hill' because it chewed up soldiers like chopped meat.

The battle began on May 10, 1969 and lasted 10 days. It took three US Army battalions with ARVN support to take Hamburger Hill. The defenders, the 28th North Vietnamese Regiment, were nearly wiped out.

One month later ARVN and US Forces left the A Shau valley, and the North Vietnamese were free to use Hill 937 once again. Critics charged that the battle wasted American lives and exemplified the irrelevance of U.S. tactics in Vietnam. Defending the operation, the Division commander of the 101st acknowledged that the hill's only significance was that the enemy occupied it. "My mission," he said, "was to destroy enemy forces and installations. We found the enemy on Hill 937, and that is where we fought them."

The Defense of the American Combat Base at Khe Sanh, also known as Operation Scotland began on the Night of January 20th and again after midnight on January 21st, 1968.

With an attack on hills 881 South and 861 just North of the base. In the early dawn hours of the 21st. A massive NVA artillery bombardment was begun upon the base. Thus, beginning the siege of Khe Sanh.

A battle that would rage between the US and the NVA for 77 days. Over 1600 NVA soldiers were reported killed by the North Vietnamese Army. Thousands more were more likely killed in the bombing strikes conducted on the outskirts of the base.
Official figures released by the US indicated 250 soldiers were lost in combat to enemy fire.

In June 1968, General Westmorland approved the destruction of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. President Johnson’s decision to not widen the war in Vietnam meant there could be no offensive into Loas. Thus, rendering the fort useless.

Through 1966 and 1967, Americans would watch on television and read newspaper accounts of American military operations, such as Masher-White Wing, Malheur, Attleboro, and Birmingham. These would not be the type of battles Americans were familiar with from World War 2 or from the Korean Conflict. Vietnam would eventually become the battlefield: the dense jungle and rugged hills near the DMZ, the wet- lands and impenetrable forests north of Saigon, and the myriad waterways and rice paddies of the Mekong Delta. In these many environments General Westmoreland was calculating that his search and destroy tactics could work. The application of that strategy was demonstrated, in part, by MACV's efforts in South Vietnam, namely Operation Hastings near the DMZ.

Early May, 1966. Hundreds of NVA soldiers of the 324th B Regiment waded across a shallow section of the Ben Hai river, the demarcation line dividing North from South Vietnam. Their mission objective was to infiltrate the four districts in central and eastern Quang Tri Province.

Early July, 1966. D-Day. A squadron of CH-46 helicopters lifts off from Dong Ha. Three waves of troop insertions are planned at various LZ sites. The first wave of helicopters set down in the river valley without incident. Sniper fire ended hope for a quiet landing as the second wave swooped toward the LZ. The third wave met disaster. In the LZ, two helicopters collided and crashed. A third, trying to avoid them, rammed into a tree, killing two marines and injuring seven. The Song Ngan Valley earned that day an infamous place in marine lore as "Helicopter Valley."

By month's end, it appeared that 324B had abandoned its offensive and was pulling back through the DMZ. Marine patrols discovered bodies, weapons, and ammunition left behind. The marines also overran a NVA regimental base camp containing a 100-bed hospital and twelve hundred pounds of medical supplies. A reporter's account in Time magazine noted that "one North Vietnamese unit apparently pulled out so fast that 500 men abandoned their field packs and left their rice still cooking in open pots." As enemy contacts tapered off, General English terminated Hastings at noon on August 3. 1966.

The 324th B Regiment paid for its incursion: 882 killed, 17 captured, and the seizure of two hundred weapons, three hundred pounds of documents and over three hundred thousand rounds of ammunition. The Marines also suffered casualties. In all 126 marines were killed and 448 wounded.
