Default The M48 Patton!

News Flash! M48 Patton Tangles with PT-76. Five enemy Tanks Destroyed! No losses to US Armor!

Today I would like to bring a little news to the community on what we have been doing at Eve of Destruction. It has been several months since we have been able to put out some newsworthy posts, but I am happy to say that we are now able to begin displaying the fruits of our labor in items to come with the next installment of the mod. Recently, we posted some news on some new items to be found within the mod build. I am happy to say that today, we have some more news!

Therefore, let's get this show on the road!

M48 Patton Tank

The M48s saw action during the Vietnam War being assigned to U.S. Marine Corps units, arriving in Vietnam in 1965, as well as three U.S. Army battalions, the 1/77th Armor near the DMZ, the 1/69th Armor in the Central Highlands, and the 2/34th Armor near the Mekong Delta.

The M48s provided adequate shelter for its crew from small arms, mines and RPGs. The M-48 Pattons were the only vehicles in Vietnam that could reasonably protect their crews from land mines and were often used for mine sweeping operations along highway 19 in the Highlands. They were typically raced down the shoulders of the highway at top speed searching for landmines. If a landmine was encountered. No major damage was taken by the tank. The most serious damage was a lost road wheel or two.

The M48 was very effective against infantry and was used alot in the infantry support role. It was capable of taking alot of punishment. The M48 served its crews well until being replaced by the M551 Sheridan tank later in the war.

Actually, that was the point. They were clearing the mines on foot with soldiers using the hand-held minesweepers. It was just taking too long and vehicles would be piling up waiting for the all clear.

All those trucks sitting idle were a really inviting target for the NVA/VC. Therefore, the decision was made to run the tanks down the shoulder of the road to "look" for landmines. As the landmines being employed by the NVA/VC were not big enough to really seriously hurt the tank. (However, they would destroy trucks and other lightly armored vehicles.)
